Intel techies predict 32 cores by '10

Intel's plans for multicore chips will reach the 32-way, 128-thread level around 2009 or 2010. That's a project dubbed Keifer, with specifications from Sun Microsystems, not AMD, being seen as the bar-raising competitor. Clock speeds by that timeframe will still be in the 2GHz range, but with all the surrounding technology speeding up to free any bottlenecks.
