Intel slashes price of quad-core chip by up to 40 percent

Intel has announced price cuts of up to 40 percent for its higher-end Core 2 quad-core processors. Also cut are the prices across a range of chips used in both mobile and desktop PCs, including Xeon processors for single-socket servers as well as older Pentium and Celeron processors.

The price cuts come on the heels of a profit forecast well below expectations as demand for IT-related hardware cooled in tandem with the global slowdown. The price reduction will certainly allow Intel to cut excessive inventories by offering a more attractive pricing to PC makers, as well as make room for the newer Nehalem-based processors. The new prices took effect officially on January 18.
