Intel rolls out new mobile, desktop processors
Look out AMD: Intel is back with new lines of laptop and desktop CPUs and they're nothing to sneeze at. Perhaps the most exciting news is the company's new flagship mobile processor, the Core 2 Extreme X7800. Just what's so impressive about this portable beast? Well, it runs at 2.6Ghz, has a 800MHz front-side bus with 4MB L2 cache, supports both Enhanced Deep Sleep (which helps conserve power) and Advanced Media Boost (for faster photo, music and video editing). Best of all, Intel has removed all barriers to overclocking with the X7800, so feel free to crank this baby up. Even while running at standard voltage, Intel claims that the X7800 is up to 28 percent faster than older dual-core parts.
But that's not all folks, oh no. In addition to the new mobile Extreme chip, Intel also debuted its new desktop lineup and it's a doozy. The new flagship chip is the quad-core, 65-nm QX6850. This thing runs at 3.0Ghz, rocks the dual 4MB Level 2 cache and is allegedly the fastest processor available to consumers today. If the QX6850 is a bit too rich for your blood, check out the rest of the new family of CPUs, all of which boast a 1,333Mhz Front Side Bus and are priced lower than comparable chips from the previous generation. Intel sure has a strong lineup in place now and seems more than ready for Barcelona's launch in August--the only question that remains: is AMD ready?
