Intel profits by $2B in Q3
Chip maker Intel earned $2 billion (32 cents per share) for its third quarter, up slightly from $1.91 billion (30 cents per share) last year. Revenue rose 18 percent to $9.96 billion, thanks to strong sales of Intel-powered laptops. Flash memory also sold well, but Intel's primary focus for the next quarter and the next year is dual-core server chips, officials emphasized. On that front, rival AMD has a significant head start. Intel also plans to increase its spending on R&D and acquisitions.
