Intel positions Atom chip to power small servers, appliances

Intel this week launched its first processor platform based on the Atom chip for powering small servers or appliances. In tandem with the new Atom D410 single core and D510 dual core processors, a 82801IR I/O Controller is used to power new hardware platforms that require higher-intensity I/O workloads. The new platform means that performance for popular consumer applications such as video processing is upped by some 85 percent, says Intel.

Already, Intel says that storage hardware vendors such as LaCie, QNAP, Synology and Thecus already have products planned around the new Atom-based platform. And no wonder, the new platform offers six PCI Express lanes, eSATA, 12 USB 2.0 ports and an integrated Gigabit Ethernet controller. On top of these, the hyper-threading capabilities of the new Atom chips meant that video transcoding performance is bolstered by some 85 percent.
