Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) will be porting Android 2.2, also known as Froyo, to run on x86-based CPUs, specifically Intel chips. While it is true that there have already been efforts in this direction by several parties, Intel is by far the largest player to do this. Indeed, Intel's software and services head, Renee James, announced that Froyo will be available this summer to developers. According to some news reports, this would likely occur within the next two months.

Intel is putting substantial efforts into capturing the low end of the market, an area Intel believes represents untapped growth opportunity for the company. Intel CEO Paul Otellini had previously told investors that Intel was embracing devices such as netbooks, handhelds and consumer electronics last year.

This obviously entails finding new uses for its Atom processor, which is built based on x86 architecture. Rather than be limited by the popularity of Windows 7 netbooks, or develop an ARM-compatible chip, Intel is seeking to change the game by bringing Android to x86. One thing is for sure, Android-powered netbooks or tablets won't be too far away.
