Intel: Out with the old, in with the new

Can't blame Intel for cleaning house this week--after all, the company has to get ready for the launch of its 45nm "Penryn" lineup, which has been promised to happen before the year is out. To that end, the company has announced that a whole slew of products have reached "end of life" status, including all of the company's Core Solo and Core Duo chips, which are expected to disappear by year's end.

Still, it wouldn't be like Intel to not announce new products on the day of AMD's biggest launch in years, so here's the new kit: the mobile Core 2 Extreme X7900, the 2.6Ghz Core 2 Duo T7800, the 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo T7250, the 1.2Ghz Core 2 Solo U2200, the 1.06Ghz Core 2 Solo U2100, the 2.0Ghz Celeron M 550, the 1.72Ghz Celeron M 530, the ULV Celeron M 523, and the dual-core, 2.0Ghz Pentium E2180. In addition to the new CPUs, the company announced massive price cuts for a number of existing processors, slashing prices on certain parts by as much as 40 percent. Boy, if we didn't know any better, we might suggest that Intel is trying to steal a bit of the spotlight here...
