Intel Nehalem processor comes to servers

Intel will be officially announcing the latest Xeon processors--code named "Nehalem EP"--in San Francisco today. The Nehalem architecture comes with improved performance and efficiency, and also provides greater support for virtualization technologies.

Already, computer makers such as IBM, Dell and Lenovo have unveiled new servers and workstations based on Intel's new processor. In addition, the incumbent--in terms of servers, anyway--Unified Computing System platform, from Cisco Systems, includes new blade servers that will be powered by Nehalem.

Interestingly, analysts don't expect the availability of Nehalem to result in any significant shifts in the chip market share. Ashok Kumar, an analyst at investment bank Colins Stewart noted, "We expect only an incremental upside on a unit basis."
