Intel to launch next-generation processors

Intel will be rolling out new Nehalem-based processors during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in just a few weeks time. Due to be unveiled will be processors manufactured using new 32-nanometer technology, as well as improved versions of existing chips. In all, Intel has confirmed that it will be launching a total of 17 new processors. In fact, Stephen Smith, director of PC client operations at Intel said at a press event that the new processors are already en route to PC makers.

Specific clock speeds or pricing information were not divulged, though Intel has earlier said that clock rates will remain similar. Among other enhancements, improvements to the processors will come in the form of more threads running per core for better performance even as they draw less power.

A new graphics processor will be integrated with the new processors, allowing for improved graphical prowess while consuming lesser power. For an indication of its capabilities, Uday Marty, director of netbook marketing at Intel was quoted saying, "We are able to process two high-definition [video] streams at the same time."

In addition, a new technology called "Turbo Boost" will also facilitate greater power efficiency by shutting off cores when not in use.  Where greater performance is required, the speed of the processor core can be ramped up accordingly. Expect new PCs and laptops utilizing these new chips to appear in the first two months of 2010.
