Intel to launch 45nm Penryn in November
After a long, hot summer, fall is finally in the air. And you know what that means, kids: sweaters, pumpkins and 45nm CPUs. It wasn't too long ago that Intel announced its intentions to ship 45nm Penryn chips before the end of the year and now we've got a hard date for when the first chips will arrive: November 12th. At the Fall IDF show in San Francisco, Intel announced plans to ship 15 Penryn models in November, with another 20 showing up during the first quarter of 2008. According to Intel, the Penryns will be more energy efficient than current Core 2 chips, while offering a 20 percent boost in performance. The company didn't announce exactly which chip configurations would be sold this year, though the first Penryns are widely expected to land in dual and quad-core workstations.
Intel also took the opportunity to show off the forthcoming Nehalem core, the 45nm successor to Penryn. Nehalem will further increase performance while reducing power consumption and will also introduce some innovative features like the ability to make real time performance adjustments. According to the company, "Nehalem can turn cores, caches and threads on and off dynamically along with the enabling/disenabling power states." Finally, Intel gave conference attendees a peek into the future with the announcement of its 32nm SRAM technology--the world's first 32nm chip--which is scheduled to arrive in 2009.
