Intel adds vPro to Core 2 Duo
Intel has been touting its vPro platform as the latest and greatest in hardware/security integration for a while now, so it should come as no surprise that the company is rolling out a new generation of vPro technologies. Today, Intel announced the latest version of the vPro platform, internally dubbed "Weybridge," which will bring vPro to three different Core 2 Duo processors, along with the company's Q35 Express chipset and its 82566DM gigabit network interface connector. In addition to the new hardware, the new vPro platform will feature a number of new management and security technologies including AMT (Active Management Technology), which allows PCs to be monitored and administered remotely; a so-called "embedded trust agent" for network security; support for remote power control and diagnostic testing even after OS failure; and additional features that have been built on top of the platform by third parties like Cisco, Symantec and Altiris. "We are trying to be a little more innovative and proactive by driving security capabilities right into the platform itself," said Gregory Bryant, vice president for Intel's Digital Platform Division.
