We already know that we're going to see desktop Penryns from Intel later this year but when will the company's mobile chips get a little of that 45nm loving? There's no official word yet from Intel, though rumors are starting to emerge about mobile Penryns that could hit motherboards around the globe as early as Q1 2008. According to Taiwanese rumor rag Digitimes, Intel has 11 different 45nm mobile CPUs ready for manufacturing, with plans to ship five of them "in the first quarter of 2008." According to the report, Q2 will bring the additional six chips, which will fall under the umbrella of the Montevina platform. According to the Digitimes' "sources at motherboard makers," we can expect the latter chips to clock in at speeds of 2.13Ghz to 3.06Ghz, consume between 25 and 35 watts of energy and boast a 1,066Mhz front-side-bus and 3MB to 6MB of L2 cache. Not too shabby.

In other Intel mobile CPU news, the Inquirer reports that Intel is getting ready to loose the Core 2 Extreme X7900--the successor to the X7800. Unlike the Penryns, this 2.8Ghz chip was allegedly manufactured using a 65nm process and sports a 800Mhz front-side-bus, while consuming 44 watts of power. If Intel really is launching its mobile Penryns next year, they're going to need something to satiate laptop buyers during the holiday season and from the looks of it, the X7800 will fit the bill quite nicely.
