A new protocol, NetConf, is being developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force to help make networks simpler to configure and more reliable once they're in use. The protocol uses XML to automate and minimize the human steps required when installing and updating routers and other network devices. Companies like Cisco Systems and Juniper already have proprietary versions of this technology, but the IETF version would make it an industry standard.
