IBM tweaks mainframes for databases

IBM has a new processor add-on for its mainframes which supercharges database performance. The $125,000 gadget is called System z9 Integrated Information Processor, or "zIPP" in Big Blue-speak, and works on the same concept as any PC offload card. Besides databases, it also controls business intelligence database maintenance, so the mainframe's regular power can be used elsewhere.
