IBM is leading a new vendor alliance called Aperi to push new open-source storage management software. Cisco Systems, Computer Associates, Brocade Communications, Network Appliance, McData and Fujitsu are all participating. That's nice, but critics say it is more of an anti-EMC marketing push. EMC said it wasn't invited to join, nor are Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi, Sun Microsystems or Veritas (Symantec) anywhere in sight. The group is also a challenge to the Storage Networking Industry Association. (SNIA and EMC were also challenged by a group involving IBM in 2002. It lasted three weeks before disbanding.)
