IBM chip architect guns for gigahertz
February 13, 2006 — 8:01pm ET
Just when everyone thought chip speeds were an obsolete metric, IBM last week started talking about 4-5 gigahertz Power chips. So is it that "the highway's jammed with broken heroes on a last-chance 'power' drive"--that IBM is a bit desperate because of the features-over-speed focus at AMD and Intel and having lost Apple's business? IBM denies that. "I don't believe there's a big role in this world for too-specialized hardware," a Power6 designer said. Power can replace the high-performance chips, IBM says. Time will tell if the chips are born to run. ;)
