IBM will launch an all-new chassis for its BladeCenter series next year. The new version will be backward- and forward-compatible, officials said. It features a 4 Gbps backplane which can also run 4x InfiniBand and virtual I/O connectors. Various new dual-processor blades using the PowerPC chips are due as well. BladeCenter led its $419 million segment with a 42 percent share in the second quarter, so it will be interesting to see what features Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Sun Microsystems invent to try to catch up with Big Blue.
