IBM announces quad-core servers
You should know the drill by now: Intel announces a new line of chips and one by one the manufacturers come out of the woodwork to announce new products that will utilize the chips. Earlier this week, we heard from Dell and now IBM is announcing servers based on Intel's quad-core parts. Based on Intel's Xeon 5300, a.k.a. "Clovertown," the five new servers (all of which boast two sockets) will see up to 64 percent faster performance when compared to their dual-core brethren. I'm not sure exactly where IBM is getting that figure from but remember, kids: Quad-core doesn't mean increased performance unless you're running multi-threaded apps. At any rate, expect to see a similar announcement from HP in the coming days.
