The specification for HTML5 aims to be official in three years' time, as the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) outlined the timeline for the HTML5 roadmap earlier this week. The "last call" for HTML5 will take place in May this year, says W3C, with actual implementation and testing scheduled next. No new features will be added to HTML5 after the last call, which is in effect a feature freeze. Testing will take place until the second quarter of 2014, and will be followed by a four week review prior to finalization.

The 2014 date range is significant, as it finally inks a time frame on a specification that some quarters expect to take up to 2022 to finalize. In fact, a W3C Interaction domain leader in October last year has advised against adopting HTML5 too early as it is simply not ready for production. Some of the capabilities outlined HTML5 include built-in support for video and audio, as well as new features to facilitate ease of programming and creation graphical elements.
