HP unveils ProCurve Firewall and IPS
For the first time, computer maker Hewlett-Packard has unveiled a firewall and intrusion prevention appliance based on its ProCurve 8212 and 5400 Series switches. Even as it enters into the firewall and IPS market, HP apparently has its eye on more than just a niche slice of the pie. Indeed, this latest announcement comes on the heels of three new security software and service products launched just two weeks ago as part of its Security Applications Center.
According to executives at HP, the company plans to not only create in-house expertise and capabilities in the security arena, but to build OEM partner products for resellers. HP plans to eventually become a significant player by continually integrating security into the "fabric" of its computing, storage and networking equipment. Some of the key security players that HP faces at the moment are well-known names such as Cisco Systems, IBM, Symantec and McAfee.
