According to reports, Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HP) is scheduled to do a major refresh of its Integrity server line. While no details are available ahead of a press conference scheduled for next Tuesday, HP has already hinted at how Intel's quad-core Itanium processor, codenamed "Tukwila" will allow the company to update the hardware of its Integrity servers.

HP's Integrity range of servers have long been positioned as an alternative to mainframe in terms of having a large memory configuration and reliability for business critical applications. Integrity servers range from entry level systems with just four processors, mid-range systems with 16 processors or high-end Superdome servers with up to 64 processors.

Where the new Tukwila, or Itanium 9300 series of processors is concerned, Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) says it will offer double the performance of existing dual-core Itanium. As the biggest seller of Itanium-based servers, the success of HP's new Integrity range is also important to Intel. Jim McGregor, chief technology strategist with In-Stat summed up the situation: "It's definitely a huge launch for Itanium."
