HP ProCurve controllers feature both wired and wireless
HP's networking division has unveiled a new "in-wall" access device that combines an 802.11b/g wireless Access Point (AP) with a built-in, four-port Ethernet switch. The HP ProCurve MSM317 Access Device is designed for use in places where wireless is the predominant connectivity option of choice, yet where support for wired technologies such as VoIP desk phones, IP TVs and other networked gear is a requirement.
Examples of places that would benefit from deployment of the MSM317 would be meeting rooms, or venues such as hospitals and hotels. To bolster the strength of its wired connectivity, one of the four Ethernet ports supports 802.3af Power over Ethernet while a fifth port is available for a standard telephone line.
Carl Blume, director of mobility solutions for HP's ProCurve group explained to Network World why HP opted for 802.11b/g, "We see 11b/g as more than adequate for a single room." In addition, the use of 802.11b/g apparently allowed HP to price the end product lower, with the list price as $349.
