HP launches Nehalem-based servers

Not to be outdone by competitors who have recently announced new servers based on Intel's new Nehalem-based server processor, Hewlett Packard has launched a new range of ProLiant servers based on the same chip. The new G6 range consists of a total of 11 rack, blade and tower models and comes packed with twice the memory and storage of earlier generations, reports ZD Net.

According to HP, customers can expect to see a 100 percent improvement on the new Nehalem-based ProLiant G6 range of servers.  Indeed, the general manager of HP's Industry Standard Servers division, Christine Reischl, told ZD Net that, "Companies will find they need half the number of servers they needed previously."

Among other enhancements, a notable new feature in the G6 range of servers would be what HP calls the "Sea of Sensors."  A total of 32 sensors monitor the server's thermal signature at various points in the chassis, and then attempt to adjust components such as memory and fans in order to optimize cooling. In addition, customers have a choice of four different power supplies that can be swapped out via a Common Power Slot design. The idea is to allow organizations to select the one most suited for a particular workload.
