HD DVD vs. Blu Ray: Everybody loses!
With both sides having launched players, hi-def discs sitting on store shelves and the monolithic PS3 Trojan horses (slowly) rolling into living rooms across America, the stage is set for 2007 to be an epic battle of the formats. No one's really sure which format will end up on top but my bet is neither. Much like minidisc and the laserdisc before that, Blu Ray and HD DVD will both ultimately prove to be transitional formats: a few HDTV-loving early adopters will invest in the new players for their home theater systems, but most consumers will choose to wait this one out until a more clearly superior format emerges. Keep in mind that the penetration of HDTV units is still low and at this point, the average American is only now building up their collection of DVDs. I don't know about you, but I sure don't want to have to re-buy my entire library of movies anytime soon, especially when I don't own an HDTV and can't really see the difference in picture and sound quality being worth the $1000 price tag on most next-gen players. HD DVD or Blu Ray? I'll stick with DVD, thanks.
