Hard disk drive shortages to continue

There is a channel shortage of larger capacity hard disk drives (HDD) for laptops and it looks like it will continue through the third quarter, at least. Ironically, the genesis for the tight supply is the result of HDD makers Hitachi and Western Digital delaying the ramping up of capacity until the second quarter. This is no doubt the result of a pessimistic reading of the economy in turn.

At the moment, the news on the ground says that demand for Toshiba's 250GB single-platter HDD has increased "significantly" since May 2009. I suppose this comes as a bit of a surprise, what with the popularity that netbooks have enjoyed and the current recession.
