H.265 video standard approved

Work on a new video compression technology has been completed, heralding the promise of even higher quality video in the near future. The new High Efficiency Video Coding standard, or H.265, has been designed as a successor to the current H.264 standard, which is heavily used in online video streaming and Blue-ray discs today.

The key enhancement to H.265 is how it essentially doubles video quality for a given network data capacity. This is expected to result in less strain on networks, as well as higher quality video without additional data overheads. An ample resolution of 7,680 x 4,320 pixels means that H.265 readily supports 4K "UltraHD" video or even 8K video.

Under the hood, the new H.265 code is available in two profiles: A "main profile" for conventional video and a "main 10 profile" for higher-end, 10-bit video. The standard also supports a still-image format, and offers the ability to incorporate various extensions. Available in January 2014, extensions range from better support for color of "up to 12 bits and beyond," support for 3D and multi-view video.

One major downside of H.265 has to do with patents. Though common for makers of consumer devices, the need for royalty payments means that web standards groups will likely shun it.
