Google: We will complete stalled datacenters

Google has come forward and said that it hasn't abandoned any of the data center projects that were recently slowed or halted. According to Data Center Knowledge, a $600 million data center campus in Oklahoma which was originally scheduled for completion in early 2009 was delayed, as well as work halted on a second data center building in North Carolina.

Addressing speculations that the slowing economy is resulting in projects being abandoned, Alan Eustance, Google's senior vice president for engineering said, "We will build those data centers. There's no doubt that over the life of the company we will need that computation. It's not a question of if, it's a question of when."

Interestingly, Eustance noted that delays may result in more energy efficient and powerful data centers. The reason is due to the ever improving performance of computing hardware. An equipment purchase that is put off by as little as six months could well result in much more powerful machines in a data center.
