Search giant Google wants in on your printing too, if it has its way. In a blog entry on The Chromium Blog, Mike Jazayeri, group product manager at Google unveiled the preliminary design for a project called Google Cloud Print. In a nutshell, Google Cloud Print will be a service that "enables any application (web, desktop or mobile) on any device to print to any printer."

While the use of a Cloud-aware printer is depicted, it is not inconceivable that appliances or an operating system like Windows or the MacOS can be made to support it. For now though, the project is still very much under development, though Jazayeri promised to make related code and documentation public.

In addition, he has also committed to transparency and engaging the community to identify the pertinent open standards to make Google Cloud Print "ubiquitous." Design docs and outlines can be accessed here.

While Google does not say so, its desire to create standards for printing probably stems from the fact that it's Chrome OS is expected to arrive later this year. Under the current paradigm, Google would have to work hard at supporting the hundreds of printers already on the market, which can only be a near-impossible task. The situation could well be very different, though, if support for Google Cloud Print gains traction among printer makers.
