Google building its own routers?
A blog post at the SD Times claims that Google is building its own router to replace the Juniper gear that is currently in use. According to the report, Google is fed up with the difficulties and limitations of Juniper's JUNOS operating system. "Multiple sources" of information were cited, and the blog entry was labeled with the ominous header "Google to doom Juniper." Indeed, Juniper Networks' share price fell earlier this week as a result of the rumor.
An excerpt from the blog reads: "In a world where traffic is likely doubling every six months, it's hard to think of any type of hardware architecture that could possibly sustain itself. It would seem that Juniper hasn't figured this out either, and Google has taken it upon itself to chase down a solution of its own."
As noted by Jim Duffy over at NetworkWorld, the rumor should perhaps be taken with a pinch of salt. This is because the claim that Google is the "one big ol' customer floating [Juniper's] bottom line" does not mesh with the company's most recent earnings call, in which Verizon was the only customer named to exceed 10 percent of revenue for the third quarter of 2008. The second quarter belonged to Nokia-Siemens.
