Google acquires chip startup by former Apple employee
Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) has acquired a stealth startup called AgniLux, which was founded by the people who designed custom silicon chips at PA Semiconductor. Apple acquired PA Semiconductor in 2008, and tapped on its capabilities in the creation of the A4 processor that powers its iPad tablet.
When approached by InformationWeek, a spokesman for Google said in an email that "We're pleased to welcome the AgniLux team to Google, but we don't have any details to share right now."
While there is some speculation that Google intends create its own processor for use in its own server, the original report on the New York Times pointed to the most probably reason for Google's decision to buy the company.
A source "familiar with the deal" was cited, who says that Google bought AgniLux for its expertise to port its Chrome and Android operating systems onto devices such as tablets. In other words, the "Agnilux technology could help Google run its software platforms on tablets without draining the battery."
