Fujitsu develops world's fastest processor

Japanese firm Fujitsu has revealed a new processor, touted to be the fastest in the world in terms of raw CPU computations. Named "Venus," the processor can supposedly crunch numbers at a rate of 128 billion computations per second, which makes it 2.5 times faster than Intel's current best. To top it off, Venus uses only a third of the power consumed by Intel's top CPU.

You won't be seeing Venus on a computer kit anytime soon, though. Not only is Venus still in development, it is also in a different league when it comes to using the device on consumer hardware and mainstream operating systems. Fujitsu itself believes that it will take several years to come up with practical applications for Venus; and it is thinking in terms of niches such as pharmaceutical research and other scientific endeavors.
