Freescale to slay vampire power draw with Watt Saver tech
Freescale is looking to work with electronics manufacturers to make its Watt Saver technology more broadly available. First introduced with AT&T's (NYSE: T) Zero Charger last year, the technology was created to eliminate "vampire" energy waste from devices such as wall chargers and electronics which are typically left plugged into wall sockets.
The technology is simple, and involves the use of an 8-bit processor that is tasked with monitoring whether a connected device is fully charged or disconnected. When that happens, a solid-stay relay activates to cut any further energy consumption by the charger. In the meantime, a super capacitor keeps the microprocessor monitor powered for up to a year, and which will automatically engage to recharge as necessary. The above components entail an additional cost of just $1 per charger, making a broader implementation viable.
