Former employee: Seagate misappropriated Convolve technology

In a new twist to a decade-long court battle, a former Seagate engineer is now alleging that the storage giant misappropriated disk-drive technology developed by a small IT company. The long running patent infringement case sees the company Convolve accusing Seagate of misappropriating technology it developed with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and demonstrated to Seagate under a nondisclosure agreement (NDA).

In an affidavit, former employee Paul Galloway says that Seagate has "widely disseminated Convolve's technology throughout Seagate's servo engineering community" while neglecting to mention the NDA.

The technology in question allowed engineers to reduce the vibrations inherent to spinning disk drives. While its value can only diminish as the world moves inexorably towards using solid state storage devices, the already struggling Seagate can certainly do without the financial repercussion should it lose the case.
