Members of the Ethernet Alliance will be meeting this week in Singapore to discuss activities to support next generation Ethernet. The Ethernet Alliance is a non-profit industry organization dedicated to supporting all Ethernet standards-based projects, and has performed a successful live demonstration of 10, 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) traffic recently. Speeds faster than 10Gbps are covered under IEEE Standard 802.3ba, which was ratified in June 2010. 802.3ba defines the physical layer technologies for the backplane, copper cable assembly and optical fiber medium.

As reported by The Register, the Ethernet Alliance intends to push the adoption of 40GbE and 100GbE technology even further with multi-vendor interoperability, which is crucial to ease the technology into actual deployments. 40GbE and 100GbE are expected to form the basis for next-generation of networking, and in my opinion, widespread adoption of 802.3ba will also help to push down the price of 10GbE in the mid-term.
