Ericsson demonstrates 500 Mbps over normal copper wiring

Using a combination of crosstalk cancellation technology and other techniques, telecom equipment maker Ericsson has successfully demonstrated 500Mbps transmission speeds over ordinary phone-grade copper wiring. This is the same wiring used by DSL lines, in which commercial deployments, to date, had more or less stagnated at 25Mbps.

Before you get too excited, I certainly would not expect to find this speed available as a DSL offering anytime soon. This is because Ericsson used a relatively short length of just 500 meters, as well as bonding together six different lines to achieve this breakthrough. Few home users are likely to have that many phone lines, though Ericsson thinks that adoption could be swift in other markets such as mobile backhaul.
