Emulex acquires Sierra Logic for $180M
Emulex, known for its storage host-bus adapters, is acquiring Sierra Logic, known for its embedded switch technology, for $180 million. Sierra's technology for improving the reliability of serial ATA drives is vital to the deal--companies like SATA technology because it's cheaper than Fibre Channel, however, it's also considered less reliable. So whoever owns that technology could hold the key to a huge new market. Emulex already sells storage components to giants like Sun Microsystems, Hitachi and Network Appliance. It's not clear if Sierra had other suitors.
