EMC to close Atmos Online storage service
EMC has announced it will be closing down its Atmos Online cloud storage service as a paid commercial service. As a result, the company no longer guarantees that existing users will be able to retrieve data stored on the service in the future, and will no longer provide any commitment to SLA or availability of the service.
We first wrote about EMC's Atmos towards the end of 2008, where it was revealed that the technology represented two years' worth of development. Atmos Online as a commercial service was launched in May 2009, though industry analysts now say that it never really took off.
While no reason was given for the abrupt move, one possible reason is that EMC does not want to compete with its partners who are offering Atmos-based services. Then again, it might be a case in which there aren't many direct customers using the service in the first place, speculates The Register.
