Disk-storage reached new highs in Q3

In yet another report, worldwide sales of external disk storage rose 12.5 percent to $3.9 billion in the third calendar quarter, IDC analysts said. EMC led with a 20.3 percent share, followed by Hewlett-Packard (19.1 percent), IBM (12.9 percent), and Hitachi Data Systems and Dell (both 8.4 percent). (Published reports were unclear about the roles of Network Appliance and Sun Microsystems.) Meanwhile, the capacity of internal and external storage grew to more than five petabytes--that's half an exabyte.
