Developers: We expect iOS and Mac OS to merge over time

Tech site Ars Technica recently hosted a live chat with several Mac developers who were quizzed about their opinion of the Mac OS X and Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) development platform in general. These developers created applications that were picked for the Ars Design Award for Mac OS X, where top Mac OS X applications were identified via a process of nomination and user votes.

What I found interesting was the unanimous agreement of the panel that Mac OS X will eventually be "subsumed" by the newly named iOS. Indeed, developer Alexander Griekspoor believes that iPads will take over the market for a majority of consumers and that only a segment of users on the MacBook will remain. And while the Mac OS X influenced the iOS in some regards, the iOS 4 now has features that the Mac OS X itself lacks.

Another developer, Cabel Sasser noted that "It doesn't make sense for them to be developing two of everything," and summed up the intricate situation between the Mac OS X and the iOS. "I could see a gradual, slow merger between iOS and Mac OS X styles and approaches."
