Dell continues its ongoing series of new product announcements this week, unveiling its line of quad-core server and desktop products yesterday. All of these new machines will be based on Intel's upcoming quad-core Xeon parts. According to Dell, the new PowerEdge desktops, the 1900, 1950, 2950 and 2900 and the SC1430 and 1955 PowerEdge blade servers will all "rival the performance of dual-core, four-socket systems." Quad-core processors "will become the mainstream technology in the market," said Eric Velfre, director of enterprise marketing for Dell. "This is not a niche market." While it may be a few years before we really start seeing the benefits of quad-core computing, Dell probably won't have any problems selling these machines to the masses, despite the debatable nature of Intel's initial quad-core offerings. These new products are scheduled to start shipping in February of 2007.
