Dell in talks to make Chrome OS computers

Dell's president for greater China and South Asia, Amit Midha, was quoted as saying that Dell wants to be "on the forefront" of innovations such as Chrome OS based devices. While not an official announcement by the computer maker, it would come as no surprise for Dell to sell a Chrome OS device. The Dell executive confirmed that talks are underway with Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) at the moment.

As noted by PC World, Dell isn't the first computer maker to consider releasing a Chrome OS device. When Google first announced the Chrome platform, the company said that its platform will be powered by netbooks from computer makers such as Acer, Asus, HP (NYSE: HPQ) and Lenovo. The inclusion of Dell however, would mean that four of the top five computer makers in the U.S. will have Chrome OS devices in their product line-up.

Google has previously announced that it will launch its Chrome OS for free in the autumn, with the first Chrome OS device to arrive later this fall. Google chief Eric Schmidt himself has earlier said that the much-anticipated netbooks are expected to hit retail shelves in the price range of $300 to $400.

Interestingly, it would appear that Google recently made moves to eliminate unnecessary instances of Windows-based computers (NASDAQ:MSFT) from its office on the basis of security concerns. In hindsight, Google could well be preparing for the impending arrival of its own operating system platform.
