Dell plans AMD servers, lower prices

Dell announced disappointing quarterly earnings yesterday and will try to improve by cutting prices and offering AMD chips in high-end servers, officials said. Dell earned $762 million for the first quarter (33 cents per share) on revenue of $14.2 billion, after earning $934 million (37 cents) on $13.4 billion in revenue a year ago. "It's not like we're trying to ignite some kind of price war, but [we'll] see where we can get," Dell's CFO said. They will also invest $100 million and hire 2,000 new employees for customer service. Product-wise, Dell is finally offering AMD chips after years of being loyal to Intel. The chips will go in multicore servers later this year.
