Dell debuts AMD servers
You'll recall that last May, Dell announced that before the end of the year, it would break years of Intel exclusivity by offering PCs and servers based on AMD chips. The AMD-based PCs hit shelves in September and this week, Dell began selling two new server products: the four-processor PowerEdge 6950 and the two-processor PowerEdge SC1435. Both machines are based on AMD's Opteron line of processors. "This is really the beginning of what we hope to be a long relationship," said Jay Parker, director of worldwide marketing for Dell's PowerEdge servers. "I would expect us to roll out additional server products over time with AMD processors." Dell's competitors in the server market, including HP--the number one seller of x86 servers, also offer AMD-based machines.
