Decision to reject Google Voice came from the top

No less than Apple's Senior VP of Worldwide Product Marketing, Phil Schiller personally told Google of Apple's decision to reject the Google Voice app. The decision came after much deliberation, which included "meetings, phone calls and email exchanges" with Google's own Senior VP of Engineering & Research.

As the mobile network converges with traditional computer networks, the once clear distinction between voice and network is blurring with increased speed. Applications typically connected via computer networks are now accessed via mobile data connections, as with the use of VoIP clients on Smartphones. Conversely, technologies such as femtocell are making it possible to route mobile voice traffic through networks.

The result is that broadband and mobile operators are running out to enact their own boundaries in attempt to protect their profit margins. While it is not possible to predict how things will end up, IT managers need to be aware and look beyond just the technical aspects when planning appliances and networks.
