Corel to support Office, OpenDocument formats
Corel, maker of the once industry-standard WordPerfect, has announced that it will support both Microsoft's Office Open XML and OpenDocument formats, starting next year. Users of both WordPerfect and Corel's Quattro Pro spreadsheet software will be able to open and edit documents saved in the two competing formats. Corel said that its decision was made in the interest of increased flexibility for users of its software, unlike many other vendors who only support one of the competing formats. "What we've seen to our disappointment is that the discussions are around lobbying in ways to nail Microsoft in a corner by these industry players," said Richard Carriere, general manager of office productivity for Corel. "It's a bit disappointing that not many people think about users of this debate."
