Cisco to bring TelePresence to the commuter

Cisco has confirmed that it will be releasing a home version of its high-end TelePresence video conference product. At CES 2010, the company said that it will move into what it calls the "home telepresence" market with a new category of video communication products. Cisco revealed that the solution will utilize an existing HDTV and a broadband connection to deliver telepresence to the home.

Beyond seeing video demonstrations of Cisco's existing TelePresence products, I have also spoken to users who have experienced it first hand. The unanimous response was that the experience is truly mind-blowing; the company is in an excellent position technically to replicate the experience for telecommuters.

Cisco says it will conduct initial tests with Verizon Communications in the United States, and also bring the service to France through a partnership with France Telecom. Given Cisco's expertise in the videoconferencing market, I believe there is little doubt that the company will be able to deliver something truly compelling for this segment.
