Choosing the right dual-core systems

Servers, desktops and even laptops with dual-core chips are finally real and shipping. How do you choose one of the more than 20 currently on the market? There are already chips designed specifically for high-performance uses, mobile uses (to save energy) and plenty of more common purposes. Other choices include the clock speed, L2 cache size, bus speed, 32 versus 64 bits, socket type, and of course price. And last but not least, do you prefer AMD or Intel?
