Businesses driving adoption of BYOD
Some businesses are now actively encouraging BYOD, or bring your own device, says a new survey conducted by Good Technology. This represents a drastic change from the passive approach initially adopted by businesses, made in acknowledgement of the growing number of devices brought into the corporate network. Businesses have traditionally been wary of the onslaught of tablets and smartphones connecting to the corporate network from within their firewalls.
The survey was reported on by InfoWorld, who observed that employees working in industries where workers are less oriented to working with information are less likely to support BYOD. Interestingly, those in highly regulated industries such as financial services and health care are among those who were most likely to support BYOD.
According to Good's vice president of strategy, John Herrema, this shows that security issues surrounding BYOD are actually manageable, and is also a reflection of the major value that BYOD delivers. Ultimately, the driving force behind active BYOD support stems from productivity improvements gained by information workers, and if Good's survey is correct, the fact that half the employers are not paying a dime for employees' BYOD devices.
