Box.net unveils integration with Google Docs
Cloud storage provider Box.net has announced "major integration" between the company and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) Docs. This move combines the cloud-based, cross platform storage capabilities of Box.net with Google's web-based productivity applications. In a nutshell, users of Box.net will be able to edit their Word and Excel files directly from their Box account. The announcement was made prior to Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) launch of Office 365, which is scheduled for June 28, and is clearly pitched against the features of SharePoint.
Google Apps are generally well-regarded and are mature compared to other available offerings. In a blog post, Aaron Levie, Box CEO and co-founder, said Microsoft isn't likely to open its Office 365 product to third-party developers. Touting the company's philosophy, he wrote: "At Box, we believe that the true power of the cloud is unlocked through deep integrations and information sharing between applications."
