Bigger, Badder Servers

Looking back again to the December 23 issue, we noted that server advancements were some of the hottest stories of 2005. In 2006, look for those advancements to trickle to your data center or even to your desktop. The advances are all over the map. Chips with just 32 bits of addressable space had a nice run, but 64-bit chips are the new king of the hill. Chips that kept getting faster and faster and faster also served us well, but now multi-core chips are about to violently overthrow your industry-standard racks. We'll also see some blast-from-the-past ideas like water cooling become en vogue again, along with sci-fi notions such as mainstream biometric security and mainframe concepts (read: virtualization). The actual beige box may look the same for your server, but its guts will be vastly different in 12 months from now.
